Like a Professional

So the life is plodding along as usual but with bounds and leaps into a solid career.

You know when you come up with a strategy on how to accomplish your next 3 year goal and you implement that strategy with a few well thought out tactics? Does it ever seem to work out the way you wanted it to? Usually the answer is no!! But for once I think my plan is working.

I've been wanting to consider myself a "professional" something for a long time and I always thought that that involved some sort of magic designation or university degree. I think now that what you really need to do is to just be a professional.

That is, treat everyday and every interaction as if you were a pro! For example, when I go to sign up for next semester's classes, I don't show up unprepared. I have all my ducks in order, all my class numbers, information and documents required to do it right. I dress well and I greet the receptionist with a big full smile. I clearly and slowly explain what I want and I show appreciation when I leave. It pays. People notice, and they talk.

Now expand this standard out into the rest of your life. How will you go to the doctor? The dentist? The accountants? The Bank? How will you greet the store clerk, the printer, or police officer? Forth right, eye to eye and with respect? Considerate, yet ambitious?

Being a pro means being professional, being organized and knowing you can tackle any problem.

Are you a professional?

New Beginnings for me

Well, I'm super stoked right now, because I am starting an internet business! The business is called Mountain Wilderness Mastery, and it will be an educational site for people who would want to learn more bout the wilderness and nature, and the equipment and skills to make your time in the outdoors more enjoyable, safe!

I'm stoked.

Prospective Career Thinking

Eventually we have to commit.  The problem is deciding what to commit too...  Its so tough!  Especially for a dude like me who thrives on variation and novelty.

My conundrum is that I would like to begin branding myself so that it can aid me in my professional life, but in order to do that I have to commit to a path. I am not sure what path that is and therefore I have to continue postponing my personal brand strategy.

Originally I wanted to be the environmental economist who tries to educate people on the ins and outs of economics, people, and policy... However, try telling people about things that people already have a conviction toward!  You can't tell a christian that god doesn't exist, and you can't educate the population about the realities that economics points too...  Scrap that brand!

Next I was thinking I would help people understand money and personal finance.  Something I think I would do fairly well at, however when your talking about people's money what your really talking about is people's habits, and most people don't want you to tell them that they actually have to change themselves before their money situation can change. I don't want to hold people's hands while they learn about the differences between wants and needs...  Scrap that brand!!

I then wanted to help other business students to be successful in business school. I wanted to show them how to utilize their time in school to their greatest advantage, and how to not be another poor student with a ton of student loan debt.  I feel I am qualified to assist in this, because I am a pretty successful business student.  For example, I haven't had to drop off a resume this year.  But I have been asked to drop my resume off in three different places and have been offered a job twice by two others. So much for the "there is no work" complaint! This is only because I utilized the right resources available to me. However I won't be a business student forever, and helping other students be great is like herding cats anyway...  Scrap that brand!!!

So what should I do?  I want to start creating content about something that will bring people value, and that is valuable enough to them that they would pay for it eventually. I need a brand that will further my career path, that will reinforce my professional front, and something I simply love to do.  But what the hell is it?!?!

Whatever the case may be, I am searching in the right places. I'm thinking way ahead and am trying to devise a long term strategy to my personal brand and how it will fit into my career.

Successful Beginings

Every once in a while I get involved with a project that I am pleased with.  This Project is the actual creation of a business competition where local entrepreneurs create and present their business idea to a panel of judges and the public.   I manage the visual and social media aspect of this project, and I am pleased with it.

Look closely, yes, the dude in the picture is me!
